My only resolve was to power the system off from the hardware switch. The filesystems on sd0 are repaired during boot up and other filesystems are repaired with fsck after that.

Prior to the incident I had been changing and reloading .Xresources, mainly trying to get the Terminus font working in xterm with UTF-8 support. The system has a couple of other issues that might be related. After a halt -p, the system will sometimes freeze just short of halting the power so I finish the job with the hardware switch. The filesystems are already unmounted in this case so I consider this a lesser issue. A rarer issue is the system failing to resume after the display is blanked. The only thing I can do is the same as the kernel crash, power off from the switch. All of this happened under 6.4 as well but the 6.4 system was an online upgrade from 6.3.
