Frankly, this sounds more like the image you are using has somehow been damaged 
(corrupted).

Check that the file you are using matches the entry in the SHA256 file, fetch 
both from
a different mirror and compare.

It is likely that the i386 version will work on your hardware, but it will run 
in 32-bit
mode with all the limitations of that mode.
