>Synopsis: amdgpu GC 11.0.1: gfx ring reset fails (MES no response, pipe
>reset unsupported) leaving GPU and console wedged
>Category: amd64
>Environment:
System : OpenBSD 7.9
Details : OpenBSD 7.9 (GENERIC.MP) #449: Wed May 6 13:17:25 MDT 2026
[email protected]:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP
Architecture: OpenBSD.amd64
Machine : amd64
>Description:
On a Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 5 7640U, Radeon 760M, APU
"Phoenix", amdgpu IP DISCOVERY GC 11.0.1, 8 CU rev 0x09), the
GPU intermittently hangs. The trigger is a GPU page fault raised
by Firefox, after which the graphics ring gfx_0.0.0 times out and
the kernel's reset attempt fails.
When the reset fails, the whole GPU stays wedged. Because the
system console (wsdisplay0) is attached to amdgpu0, the machine
becomes unusable: it is no longer possible to switch to a text
VT, and only a hard power cycle recovers it.
The failure is intermittent. With the identical trigger (Firefox
GPU page fault + gfx_0.0.0 timeout) the ring reset sometimes
succeeds and recovery is transparent; other times it fails and
the GPU is lost. The difference appears to be whether the MES
responds to the RESET message.
Failed reset (machine wedged), from /var/log/messages:
drm:gmc_v11_0_process_interrupt *ERROR* [gfxhub] page fault (src_id:0 ring:88
vmid:4 pasid:1056)

Successful reset (transparent recovery), same trigger, earlier date:

drm:amdgpu_job_timedout *ERROR* Starting gfx_0.0.0 ring reset
drm:amdgpu_job_timedout *ERROR* Ring gfx_0.0.0 reset succeeded
A related MES symptom also occurs on its own:
drm:amdgpu_mes_reg_write_reg_wait *ERROR* failed to reg_write_reg_wait
>How-To-Repeat:
Run Xorg with the amdgpu/modesetting driver on this APU and use
Firefox with hardware (WebRender GPU) acceleration enabled. Heavy
page loads / compositing occasionally raise a gfxhub page fault
attributed to firefox, which leads to the gfx_0.0.0 timeout. The
hang is not reproducible on demand; it has occurred several times
over a ~2 week window. When the subsequent ring reset fails, the
GPU and console are lost until a hard reset.
>Fix:
Unknown. Workaround that avoids the trigger: disable Firefox GPU
acceleration (about:config gfx.webrender.software=true, or
layers.acceleration.disabled=true), which prevents the page fault
and therefore the hang.
The underlying issue is that on GC 11.0.1 the gfx ring reset path
cannot recover: MES does not respond to msg=RESET, and the pipe
reset fallback is rejected by firmware ("The CPFW hasn't support
pipe reset yet"). Possibly addressed by newer amdgpu firmware /
a more recent drm sync; reporting in case the reset path can be
made more robust or the firmware requirement documented.
Note: not yet retested on a recent -current snapshot; running the
7.9 release kernel (GENERIC.MP #449).
