It's true that this project has been pushed down the work queue for us
several times now but AFAIK, we still intend to get working on this in
time for JDK 9 (though this might of course change again). We are
actually supposed to restart it "any day now". The work will take place
in the open build-infra repos so you will be able to follow it (and
contribute!) as soon as we get to start.
