 I think a new mode should be introduced.  I like the scorched-earth
 clobber mode for when things get really messed up, but prefer to not touch
 remote systems where possible.

 Perhaps a mode=clean would make sense that allows an implementation to do
 what's necessarily to clean up any non-checked in files.  git clean, hg
 purge, and probably others can do the work.
