The fix broke it worse:
$ sed 's/\(["`$\\]\)/\\\1/g' << "EOF"
{\"\1\"
EOF
{\\\"\\1\\\"
$ busybox sed 's/\(["`$\\]\)/\\\1/g' << "EOF"
{\"\1\"
EOF
{\\1\\
Previous version of busybox sed handled this case fine.
