Nope, the problems with Radio Shack began long before that

The original owners were two hams in the 1920’s. They sold the business to
Tandy Corp, a family based leather craft company. Tandy expanded in the
‘60’s into Electronic crafts and two other embroidery craft business
(Macramé, Beads and fringe).

The second mistake they made was to expand the number of outlets without any
good data. As a result, too many stores , too close together. In my area
there are two Radio Shacks on Hwy 6 within a mile of each other. And five
within 5 miles.

THEN they had to find something to sell besides parts. They went after the
cell phone market because it was a techhie device at the time. They did not
foresee that it would become an appliance of everyday life.

They held on to the parts business too long. Should have dumped it years
earlier. Not enough margin to support all those stores. I mean, how much
can you make on a ¼ watt 100 ohm carbon resistor?

Any idiot can see they have too many stores. Why they didn’t pull back is
the real question.

Better go get my RCA connector today.

Radio Shack stock has been delisted by the New York Stock Exchange.

Rumor has it that they will be closing half of their stores and selling the
rest to Sprint.

More proof that they have been dying a slow death ever since they made the
decision to emphasize cell phones over the other products like components
and hobbyist sector of their business where they had their roots.
