Rick and Jon, Personally, I think it has to do with non-linearity of the
amp. I will try to explain: if the basic signal is produced cleanly by the
driver unit then when the amplifier is added, the non-linearity clipping of the
amp causes an undefined amount of compression, thus the signal sound louder at
the received end. This is more pronounced when an amp is over-driven, and can
be seen on an o'scope display. Jon may have a valid point ALC action, but am
more inclined to point at the non-linearity produced by the amplifier
