Scott:
Well, the DDC/DUC (Direct Down/UP Conversion) has
a single A/D converter followed by digital quadrature
mixer in the form of an FPGA which outputs a digital I,Q
stream. QSD RXs have a hybrid quadrature mixer (basically
analog) followed by two A/D converters producing the I,Q
stream. For those unfamiliar with the notation, the I and Q
digital signals are in 90 deg. quadrature where Q = HT(I)
(Hilbert Transform) required for later demodulation.

The Flex 5000 was the 1st DDC/DUC from Flex,
but the 1000, 1500, and 3000 used QSD which is
a cheaper direct sampling technology as have many
other SDRs in the last 10 years or so.

ICOM is claiming that they are the first to offer direct sampling
. I thought that most of the new Flex line already did that.
Seems that all new rigs now claim they are SDR. Whatever that is.
