Howdy All,

Seen below is an Intel NUC that I got from Pat, KJ5Y. I’ve just completed
adding a 2nd gigabit Ethernet NIC to the unit. That’s the yellow wire in case
you’re wondering.

This puppy is going between the cable modem and the home network and will
provide:
1. Packet firewall
2. DNS cache - this really speeds up the ‘Net.
3. DHCP services for the LAN side.
4. Dynamic DNS connection on the public interface.
5. Print spooling to a USB-connected printer or for the LAN itself. (remember
to write blog on why you shouldn’t spool directly to the printer in a
multi-computer environment…)
6. Anything else I care to put on it.

Running Centos 7 Linux (Red Hat 7).

I’ve been running a Juniper SSG5 firewall for many years, but it has issues
with the XYL’s firm’s Windoze VPN client that she needs to work from home. It’s
also only good up to 100Mbps. Comcast is giving me 105 at times and they can go
up to 384MBs with DOCSIS 3.0 modems.
