On the general subject of cutting down the privacy “leaks”, reducing what is
sent where, primarily in this case to Microsoft, I saw a great presentation on
shutting down many things here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kGMCfb2xw

Barnacules (the presenter) speaks to Windows 10, but I found much of the stuff
headdress in my Windows 7 machine. In fact, partly because he seems to have
shown me how to shut down so much on the privacy front (a primary concern in
Windows 10) I am moving that machine forward to Windows 10 but using his
presentation and the tool he demonstrated to shut things down. That tool is
free and is from our old friends at Spybot.

Towards the end of his presentation there are a few things that you may or may
not want to do, depending on your comfort level with the topics. That’s a very
small part of the whole presentation.

The tool he uses for the “safe for everyone” stuff is Spybot Antibeacon.

Find Spybot Antibeacon here:

https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/

It’s free and safe according to Barnacules, I personally trust the Spybot
folks, so I pass it on to you.

Subject: [BVARC] Off-Topic: Vastly Improving Web Browsing

All,

Recently, I was shopping on Amazon for some N bulkhead connectors. Going other
places on the web such as Fox News, ads kept popping up trying to sell me N
connectors! Everywhere I went were N connectors. And NO, it wasn’t God telling
me that we should do away with PL-259s <grin>.

Every day we are tracked and monitored by commercial entities on the web. They
have a profile of each of us and they sell this information for profit. Besides
this, all of the tracking systems slow down the browsing experience because
they use bandwidth.

We can drastically reduce tracking systems using 2 browser plugins:

AdBlock. This blocks most adware. Pandora will complain as will other sites,
but many sites with adware also have viruses for free download. You can turn it
off if you need to on a site-by-site basis.

Disconnect.Me - (www.disconnect.me) This blocks trackers. It’s donation ware
and I’m going to donate a bit to them for the free version.

As I write this, in my browser’s window I have Pandora playing. At this moment
41 ads have been blocked and 31 trackers.

Sometimes I go to a site where I get a “canvas” warning. This is when the site
is monitoring where your mouse moves on the screen!

Like turning on the filter for CW, the noise is reduced!

Pass it on.

73!
