Scott,
If you need any advice on solar power, I have attended a week long solar power
training from Ontility.   I have solar panels on a sun tracking system on my
ranch to drive water well, and irrigation pumps.  I also have a package tool
that allows me to photograph an area you want to mount panels, and it will tell
you how your projected location will fare throughout the year as the sun path
changes through the seasons, all while taking a single pic at any date of the
year.  It will take fish-eye pic of the trees, surrounding area, buildings,
etc, and project how much your yearly solar accumulation will be without having
to wait until it happens 6 months later.  Just an offer.

This offer applies to all BVARC members as well who intend to install solar
power.

Subject: [BVARC] Solar powered FT-817  Have not powered the radio yet but
results so far are promising.  The 817 requires 10.5 volts nominal at 2 amps on
TX.   Through the controller, the panel voltage is 13.8.  It then goes to
avoltage buck to reduce the voltage to 10.5-10.6.   The controller has a fused
limit of 3 amps.  Note, there is no battery in the system. The next step is to
power the radio with yet another fuse protection.  TravisK5HTB
