For various reasons, I chose not to attend this year.  I'm sorry I missed the hamfest, but I just couldn't make it work.  Having said that, and while I agree with the sentiment that volunteers are essential for the effort, I have two things to point out.  First, that the basic level of involvement is attendee.  Be grateful for those who attend because if nobody comes, it doesn't matter who the vendors are.  Second, there are organizations that I don't even attempt to volunteer for because they never seemed to want me to do anything.  Every time I tried to volunteer for them, I was told not to do anything.

Not that any of the organizations I'm speaking of would be known to any of you out there in BVARC-land, but that points to something that you should be aware of. Becoming a volunteer is not an easy task for most people and an organization that intends to depend upon the efforts of volunteers into the future should spend some time thinking about how to bring likely people along.  That is, how to turn attendees into volunteers and volunteers into section heads and so forth.

I personally, I think GHHH turned out pretty well. I hope those complaining

they require volunteers and we didn’t hear from near enough of our members. .
If you’re not volunteering for some reason that’s understandable. But if you
just didn’t bother to show up, then you have no right to gripe.
