Instead of buying a $4000 legal limit amplifier, why not buy a smaller amplifier?  A brand new 800W amplifier can be had for about $1000 and I expect used ones can be had cheaper.  800W will increase your signal by an S-unit and a half, while the legal limit would increase your signal by not quite two S-units.

I run a 75 meter worked all states net with 100 watts output. Stations in the New England area states, the northern states and the west have trouble copying me or can’t and I have to get relay stations to get them checked in. I would love to have a nice amplifier but I just do not have $4000 to buy one. What I want to know is ... is there some possible way to increase the power up to say 250 watts so I’d be reaching all states better? An old used amp? Would it work with a yaesu 450d? The antenna is a home brew 75 meter dipole above my house and going into an L shape. Another note I do not have the $700 or so for fancier antenna and I’m not sure it would put out a stronger signal. In any case what is the best way to get more power for someone on a budget?
