Chris, Discones are cool skyhooks....and very broadband, but not much gain. Have a look at The ARRL Antenna Handbook the chapter on broadband antennas -- Discones. Also, the Antenna Compendium # 5 has an article. Or if you feel historic, see CQ magazine July 1949....a first look at the Discone for ham work. A discone is simply a coaxial transmission line that has been open and splayed or fanned out. Shield bent over and center wire to the disc.
