I also have/had (still in the family)1998 Dodge Lariat, it has the original transmission. The only issue I had with it was related to not driving it often enough. If it set for a week or two, transmission fluid would drain from the internal valves and would require a minute or two to warm up before the fluid was fully pumped back into the transmission valves. We still have that old Lariat chariot, with 145,000 miles on it. She still runs great and look good. I had for 15 years, sold it to my uncle, three years later he sold it back to me and then 18 months later bought it back. Keeping it in the family. We have a deal, he has to give me first option to buy it back.

I ordered a 1998 Dodge Dakota, new, and owned it until 2018 where I sold it with a little over 243,000 miles and original engine and original transmission. I must have owned a unicorn. I hate that I sold it.... or I'm happy I sold it before the tranny went out. Maybe I should count my blessings. That was a great truck!

Suburbans have transmissions that seldom last more than 100K miles. I have 2020 LT Suburban and lost my trans at 90K. The repair shop had four suburbans in the parking lot with blown transmissions and each had less than 100K miles. I love suburbans, however their engineers have obviously designed them to be replaced at or about 100K miles. Over the last twenty years I have had to rebuild four suburban transmissions. I hope the gentleman finds a good mechanic. I would recommend Adam at Highway 6 Transmission.
