Crossroads is a great system....146.700 is the main downtown VHF at 900ft with
443.725 on UHF at a different site at 750ft. My 146.94 here in the Beaumont
area is on Crossroads except when it switches to the East Coast Reflector for
its nets (and AR Newsline at 12noon Sundays. I'm the longest ARN member and
bulletin station going back to the 70s when it was originally Westlink.
Bill Pasternak WA6ITF, SK, was co founder along with another California ham
whose name and call sign escapes me right now.. Bill was a longtime personal
friend.. in the mid 70s, I called him on the phone and we ended up talking for
3 hours! He wrote about it later in his 73Magazine column, Looking West. I was
still in college at the time and my mom was not happy with a $300 phone bill
lol.. one year at Dayton, Bill tried to set me up with another fellow Newsline
member Cathy Gilliland. We went out to dinner and then went dancing at a club
in the hotel that she and her dad were staying at. I even traveled to Hiawatha
Kansas to visit her one weekend. But that didn't work out, long story there. Oh
well..
I made his memorial service in LA in 2015, in fact I was the last person to
talk to him on the phone before he passed. Richard Rudman of the national EAS
committee and other broadcast folks from the California area were there. We
were all standing outside the church in our suits when Bill's daughter walked
up.... when I had talked to her on the phone a couple of days earlier she said
"Chris, dad would want you to come out here dress casually because of the heat
wave." Yeah it was 80° in the sunlight.. when she walked up to us in our suits,
she gasped "my God aren't you guys hot?" I just looked at the other guys and
smiled and I said "she's never been to Texas and seen a tree met!!
