Just a note:

I found the "suggested" system requirements (system requirements are
listed under the install notes for each processor/architecture type)

If you look at the "Desktop Environment" option, you see that the
download size is 454 MB.  Wow.

So when I install the Etch on my VMWare, I might choose *not* to
install the Desktop Environment.  I could then complete the
installation, and use apt-get or aptitude to get KDE, and see how long
that takes.
