The two stumbling blocks are:

1) registering with AT&T/SBC
2) preserving the PPPoE settings in the modem

The first task isn't hard, but rather tedious. That is, there are a
lot of little steps that are easy to do individually, but one little
misstep and the whole thing doesn't work. The second step is just
annoying: the modem won't save the settings unless it is hooked up to
a phone line with DSL. Suggestions on how to simplify the process
would be greatly welcome.

Another option would be to train volunteers to make house calls to setup DSL.

In other words KDE under Debian doesn't automount removable storage.
In Ubuntu there's an option one can change: System > Preferences >
Removable Drives and Media > Storage. Does something similar exist
for KDE?

Do any of the classes cover various ways to save a file (floppy, USB
stick, desktop, e-mail)? If they do, maybe we need to measure
competency in the task (e.g. swap floppies, e-mail the file to the
instructor, other)?
