I will try to connect to that share again this Saturday.

I think that I missed the password part last Saturday.

I was able to share my USB drive, but I couldn't get clients' machines
to mount it as writable.  I've been trying some stuff at home, and I
think I have to specify -o username= when mounting.

I had more success using Konqueror and other GUI clients to write to
the USB drive than when I try to mount the drive from the clients'
machines.  

In any case, I will document the process of sharing a USB drive to the
wiki when I get a workable solution.
