This is a little OT, but hopefully not too much. Microsoft have deprecated DirectPlay--actually, a couple of years ago, it looks like. It doesn't seem to be in DirectX 9.3.
As far as I can tell, there is no real successor to DirectPlay. Microsoft is pushing its Xbox Live technology, but that won't be available on Windows until Vista is relased. Even then, Xbox Live is a lot more than just a programming interface--you have to go through centralized Microsoft servers. It also includes chat through headphones, webcam, and a lot of stuff we're not interested in. And here's where it intersects C++. It looks like the interface is only C#, not C++. So, what's the successor to DirectPlay for networking games, especially LAN games (i.e., all players on one sub-net)? Do we just roll our own with sockets? Do we go out and spend $5,000 for a custom library (there are some). Cordially, Kerry Thompson To unsubscribe, send a blank message to <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. Yahoo!
