No, I said to run the app. under a debugger and start placing 
breakpoints around the area of the code you need to modify to get a feel 
for how it works.  You don't need to fully understand an application's 
inner workings to modify little bits of code.  Your initial projects 
should be small anyway so you have a chance to understand it before 
making huge global changes.  And if you break something there is always 
"revert" in version control.  You are using version control - that's 
Chapter 12 (IIRC) of Safe C++.
