For the most part, programming requires a good understanding of logic. 
Those with a heavy math or philosophical background tend to already 
think logically and make good candidates for jobs.  In fact, I know of 
at least one business who has hired philosophy majors fresh out of 
college for IT programming positions who had never written a line of 
code before.  They were chosen because "programmers carry a lot of 
baggage and we want to indoctrinate new hires into our way of doing 
things" (obviously, they were trained on the job).
