Well, it won't look bad.  You will have to flavor up the reason why your 
knowledge isn't current.  I recommend learning to use VS2008 on your own 
so that you keep your skill set current.  VS2008 Express is free.

Firing someone over doing something as trivial as using the STL is 
hardly a good reason to fire them.  There is something wrong with that 
compiler if dropping in the STL causes the Release build to increase the 
size of the final executable by 8MB.  There is probably more to that 
story than has been told to you.  But, if there isn't more to that 
story, you should consider looking elsewhere for a job since the tiniest 
mistake will result in being fired.  Getting fired is almost always 
detrimental.

There are about 5 people in the world using Windows 95 and maybe 1 
person using Windows 3.x.  Targeting those OSes is completely 
ridiculous.  There are, unfortunately, Windows 98 users still in existence.
