[c-prog] Null pointer assignment

I guess the heading says it all!

I keep getting this error especially when dealing with character
pointers and functions. I've tried my very best and almost denounced
pointers as an interesting subject, then I remembered i'm a member
here... So please help! I've seen lots of suggestions online, but
nothing concrete so far!
