It isn't about "choices".  It is about what gets the job done and meets 
my needs best.

The OS used really doesn't matter a whole lot to me.  But Windows is 
required for the VC++ debugger, which is infinitely better than gdb. 
I'll go where the best debugger is.

Gaming is a low priority for me, BUT "all work and no play..."

VerifyMyPC covers the Microsoft/Google aspect just fine.  Written in C++ 
by yours truly, I can do whatever I want with the app.  Tracking their 
activity on my system is sufficient (for the moment) to know that _when_ 
they screw up my system (they haven't done that...yet), I'll be there to 
sue them for their pants as depicted below:

Silent update => Screwed up system => Lawsuit => Pants.
