You can try to add the --disable-pretty-make option to configure. I
think this will work though there are no guarantees.
I can confirm that Xerces-C will build without GNU make if you use the
--disable-pretty-make option.
I think that prettified make should be removed entirely, or at least not
be the default. I don't think it's a good idea to require GNU make just
for the sake of a cosmetic option.
