Perhaps it would make sense to add support for bootchart[1] into the
installer (AI and other), at least for development.  There would be a
small amount of dtrace required that could then dump an xmlish file to
the installed image just as the installation finishes.  This data
could be post-processed with a small python program to generate a
pretty graph that shows exactly where the time is spent.
