You need to copy boot_archive to your local Sparc system,
modify it there and then copy it back.

Before you spend more time on this, did you consider to
install your Sparc system by means of media (CD) ?
As Mary pointed out in separate email, besides bootable
AI, there is also media text installer which you could use
to install your Sparc machine (assuming it is equipped
with CD drive).

I am mentioning this, since things has been evolving and
diffs posted in bug 9549 might not need to work without
appropriate modifications.
