Looking in the AI guide, I see that I can specify SVR4 packages for installation in the <add_drivers> section.
<add_drivers> is intended for adding drivers needed to complete an installation.  Packages must contain only files which get installed into a non-read-only file system (e.g. /kernel, NOT /usr) on booted install images.

For AI, these driver packages get installed twice: in the booted environment before the installer runs to populate the target disk; and onto the target disk after the rest of the installation completes.

The "Identify and Install Missing Drivers on an Install Target" section of the AI guide has some examples:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-6566/gkhuc?l=en&a=view

See /usr/share/auto_install/ai_manifest.xml for examples as well.  You'll have this file if you already have installadm installed.

I'll let others answer the remaining.
This is good to know.

I was sort of guessing that since the constructs for the <software_data> section were there and since the dtd referenced SVR4 packages, I was sort of hoping to be able to specify a regular SVR4 package outside of <add_drivers>.

I tried to be sneaky and act like a regular package was a driver, but your explanation, and the fact that it tried to install it as a driver, told me that that won't work.

My underlying intent is still to find ways to ease existing Solaris 10 folks into an IPS / AI world.

Thanks!

    Thanks,

Also, looking in the software.dtd, it looks like I can specify, in general, other things besides just IPS packages for installation - FILE, DIR, SVR4 in particular.

How can I use these?  Where are these documented?  Looks like it these could be really helpful.
