Hi Ben I think the very first step is to follow the "15 min Cake Blog Tutorial" http://manual.cakephp.org/appendix/blog_tutorial It allows you to setup a cake install, and build a very simple blog engine with it, thus demonstrating Cake's basic concepts. Once you're done with it, check out the rest of the manual to learn more about all these concepts and other Cake features. All this should be a good start...
