I think your analysis is spot-on, EventHQ is well-priced for the
feature set available but as a result can be too expensive for some
users, particularly those offering small(ish) free events or those who
are happy with reasonably minimal functionality. You could also check
out EventWax which I believe is free at the moment. They do talk about
a new version coming with a powerful API but that has been coming for
ages, so am not sure on a due date.

Feel free to get in touch though as I am open to ideas/discussions,
whether about getting EventHQ working with other services or just
informal chat on brand building and/or selling a web app/SAAS in the
UK at the moment!

Definitely have plans to implement a 'proper' API. Its slow though for
the usual reasons (features prioritised based on customer demand, only
24 hours in a day). Currently I'm refactoring the system to be more
RESTful as part of a major overhaul of the app (due live in the next 3
to 4 months) and I will then start opening up the API a little more.
Again, feel free to get in touch via other channels (email, Skype,
whatever) as I'm always happy to chat through these sorts of things.

Cheers, Ianh
