I've seen comments to the effect that Prototype might be replaced with jQuery but that's not likely to be for some time. It would cause a lot of breakage, for one thing. Unless AjaxHelper is given some kind of configuration options to choose JS framework. Then, maybe, the helper's methods could transparently use the other framework.
Hmmm ... I think I smell a project. In any case, my advice would be to avoid the AjaxHelper if you're at all interested in jQuery. I don't miss it. (Although, I've never used it, so what do I know?).
