To be blunt: don't waste your time. Just use WordPress - it takes 5 minutes to set up and has a ton of features, plugins, themes, etc. I use WordPress for my CakePHP blog and I love it - so easy to maintain, in that I don't have to maintain it at all. :) The last thing I have time to worry about is my blog, especially when there's a ton of paying work that needs to come first.
