Frosting a cake is actually quite difficult..at least I think so. First thing
you should do when you do frost your cake is to "crumb coat" it. That's
basically a very thin layer of icing....let that dry a bit, and then add your
frosting. This helps not get those little pieces of cake all over you icing.
To smooth it out, you can use some parchement paper and just lay it over the
cake and smooth with your knife. It really helps alot. Don't forget that you
will be decorating your cake, so it doesn't have to be perfect! :o)
