GRAMPS" CANADIAN WAR CAKE
("You'll Fight For A Serving Of This!")
Cake:


2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. hot water
4 Tbsp. margarine
1 box raisins
3 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1 lb. nuts

"Gramps" Canadian War Cake Icing:
2 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. milk
1 Tbsp. vanilla

Cake: Boil raisins in water for 5 minutes. Add brown
sugar and margarine. Stir until melted. Sift flour and spices
with the baking powder and soda. Stir raisin mixture, flour
mixture, applesauce and nuts until mixed well. Pour into
greased tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until an inserted
toothpick comes out clean.
Icing: Combine the brown and white sugar, butter and
milk in a saucepan. Cook over low heat until mixture forms a
soft ball when dropped into water. Cool. Add vanilla. Spread
icing over the cake entirely. One half cup of nuts may be
added to the icing if desired.
