I've heard and agree with not doing medleys as the very last dance in any set. Usually that's when the band is pulling out their hottest tunes, and it's sub-optimal to be calling over them the entire time.
I'm inclined to reserve them for weekends. If calling at a regular dance I know can handle it, I'd go for shortly after the break when the dancers are in a groove, and before folks are tired/brain-fried at the end of the evening. Whenever you do them, it seems helpful to announce during the walk through of the previous dance that the next dance will be a medley. It gives experienced dancers a heads up to help out.
