I can also attest that on at least one waltz here in St Louis, Ed played, recording himself, then recorded himself playing harmony with the playback, then played a third voice with the recording of the two harmonized parts. That's three musicians. I don't think John was doing foot rhythms and playing harmonica while he was playing guitar, but he could have been, so that would be six.
And, just so we keep the record straight, it's not their "tricks" I love them for. It's for their solid, terrific musicianship.
