Strip the willow and peel the banana are not the same. Both are common ceilidh figures; peel the banana is as Michael B. described, and as Bill mentioned, strip the willow is the "reel the set" move in Virginia Reel or Sir Roger de Coverley or Strip the Willow, etc.
I would call the move you've described a peel the banana, Ben, even if it's a fatter banana than usual because of the weird formation.
