Lok Mam Sonando knows very well “who is who” within and among SRP, HRP
and other political parties. Some statements he has made may offend leaders,
members and followers of said individual party. However, putting political
all philosophy and rhetoric aside, there are a lot of truth and reality in
what he had described about those leaders and their political
organizations.
Mr. Sonando (and everyone in Cambodian political sphere) knows that there
are divisions within SRP, HRP and others. He knows that there are dishonest
politicians within all of them. He knows that the CPP only leaves certain
rooms for the oppositions to walk and play (politics). He understands that,
logically, with the current systems intact and with the ways the
oppositions operate, the CPP will always win.
The whole world including all opposition leaders know that, too. The
difference is they (opposition leaders) don't admit or tell their supporters
the
whole truth for fearing that they may lose their supporting bases—manpower,
money, other contributions and public image, etc…
To their credit, the opposition leaders have managed to drum up some
supports among Overseas Khmers to venture on thus far. The CPP is more than
happy to see that such processes don't die down, because without financial
support from overseas it may have to somehow help fund or create another
opposition party to legitimize its power.
Cambodians inside Cambodia are much smarter than we think regarding
Cambodian political playing fields. Many of them have been playing along very
well to make a few dollars more per campaign season. Try not to fund them for a
couple of months, you will see what happen. While some hardcore members
still believe in their leaders’ imaginary vision that the opposition will
win one day, many pragmatic ones just take a ride along until the end of the
road.
Questioning Mr. Sonando’s patriotism because what he had to say is not a
wise move. It is much better to take him as one of the critics; value his
opinions for he is right and view him as an opponent to the oppositions.
Those outsiders who have not set your foot inside Cambodia and have not gotten
involved deeply in “real politics” ought to keep your mind open.
Regards,

Dear compatriots,

I do agree with you lauk Pretty Ma on the complexity of issues in regard
to Cambodian politics and that lauk Mam Sonando, although as patriotic as he
is should limit himdself just to educate and unifying fellow khmers on
moral and social issues which I think he is appropriate for and passionate and
leave politics to though suited for. I had the opportunity of having met
Mr. Mam Sonando at the International Convention for Human Rights in Melbourne
last year hosted by Khmer Krom. Though naive at times on international and
political issues however I found Mr. Mam Sonando is a committed individual
who fought hard for justice and democracy for fellow khmers, not afraid of
losing his life at the process, a true patriot, no doubt. He is a radical
and with lack of understanding of politics and protocols in general did not
realised the consequences of his words and the impact that it has on a
general khmer population. Nevertheless, he is a rare breed and should be
commended to be on our side.

Warmest regards,

Suon Vandee

Dear Colleagues & Friends,

I could not believe what I was listening to Mr. Mam Sonando last Monday
night, June 8, 2009. It was shocking to hear such a vicious personal attack
against the Right Honourable Sam Rainsy and the party by a man whom I
thought to be somewhat patriotic. I was once thought of him rather highly,
although I never really get a chance to meet or hear him. He disappointed me
big time. What is he trying achieve in using his broadcasting facility
to blitz attacks on the official opposition when the country is in need of
one? In the interest of whom or what parties he was trying to do?

Mr. Sonando's choices of words were really poor and sounded childish at
time. He pretended to be intelligent, a lot more than Sam Rainsy as he
called our leader "Akvichea" (uneducated). As his personal attack went on
you
began to realize how shallow his arguments were, unsupportable,
short-sighted, and they showed his tremendous lack of judgment and ability to
think
critically on issue as complex as Cambodian politics.

He did not understood the failure of some major parties that came before
Sam Rainsy, including many over the years. Who and what parties benefit
most from this attack on SRP? And is that part of overall solutions he
wanted to offer country on what he proclaimed to be a winning solution? When
the country is in dire need of a unifying nationalisitic forces, he chose
to do the opposite. It is mind boggling.

What he was offering to the listeners was something more like Alice from
the Wonderland - rosy, uncomplecated, matters that he think he can solve
by bringing all little parties into one. Just like that, done. He didn't
understand the human behavioural aspect to the game, including all the l
eaders/players involved. He overlooked importan factor such as the
disappearance of KNLP, or the broken Funcinpec/Rannaridh party which almost
got
wiped out from past election. Did he ever understand that there are men who
think less of the nation, but only thirst for personal power and a quick
rich scheme? Just look around he will find plenty, including some who has
gone into retirement, already. Furthermore, he forgot that the CPP is loaded
with cash, tree's money, donours, loans, crooked businessmen, radios, TVs,
so the playing field is not at the same level. We managed to do do well
despite all the odds stacked up against us, included impulsive yet
unrealistic mindede people like Mr. Mam.

As for the 50+1 formula, he could have better understood the significant
of that strategy going forward. He should dig deep into the roots of the
Cambodian political problems, understood the players's characters and their
past and present behaviours. The jiggling for position, posts,
re-alignment here and there not on principles or values, but on personal
gain.

Let's look at all the mess our country has been in since a coalition
gov't was created, Funcinpec/CPP, and what exactly good came out of their
perfect marriage? Look at the last general election, the marriage still
stand
despite of all the up and down between the two. Without the 50+1 formula,
you can be sure that CPP and Funcinpec will continue to loot the country
for ever. He could have seen that coming easily. Another missing fact.

But now, the country has a real choice. It is down to two formidable
parties. For the first time, we provide Cambodia and our people a real
alternative to the CPP-ruling party. As for Mr. Mam, he should embrace this
concept with a nationalistic sense of urgency by being a REALIST, not by
trying to destroy a credible party which has built itself successfully over
the span of 15 years or so. It takes time to plant, water and grow - to
build trust and to know who your friends are. We have grown and continue to
grow despite the fact that many circumstances set against us. We ran
against a big money vote-buying machine, the CPP.

What Mr. Mam Sonando should be doing in his capacity is to use his talent
and his supposedly love for the country to help enhancing people's
knowledge and understanding of how democracy works in practicality, in a
country
such as America or Canada. He should encourage people to think of how a
system of check-an-balance works, and what people need to do or reflect in
order to improve or having one. He should talk about getting people involved
in the political process and how to go about doing it. He can not dream
of having a democracy like USA when he did not understand the fact that
Cambodia is not USA, nor the process of democracy has taken roots as yet. He
should be realistic and be more thoughtful by help encouraging all the
tiny disgruntle parties to rally behind a us in order to grow and win
together, to offset the balance of power and to keep democracy moving forward
from
where it was and what it is now. He should not use his personal forum and
radio station to attack an nationalist force and in this case a very
formidable and yet official opposition party. In my opinion, he did not do
himself, nor his countrymen any favour by being unti-nationalists when the
country is in need of a stronger opposition to the current regime.

Unfortunately, since he is and never has been a leader of any political
party, it is understandable for the way he argued his case. However, one
fine day in hindsight he will get to appreciate what this party has done,
what it stands for and what it aims to achieve in its quest for forever
justice, freedoms and liberty for all Cambodians, inside as well as abroad.
As long as people like Mr. Mam Sonando continues to be unrealistic of their
view and political practices, then the road to freedoms and democratic
reforms will be somewhat hindered than we would actually like to see. But,
we will move on as a movement of hope and change.

I wish that our dear Mam Sonando remains neutral, politically realistic
and engage in a forum of more or less unifying, not the way he conducted
himself on the air on that Monday. He is more than a man to many ordinary
Cambodians, and I do wish to see him stay above his poor phrases and
judgment for the betterment of all people, including Mr. Mam Sonando, himself.

I still hope.

Truly Yours,
Pretty
