Human development is a concept that offers an alternative approach to
development thinking, shifting attention of development work from mere
economic growth more towards people’s well-being. It argues that development
is about ensuring people’s freedom and opportunities to live long, healthy
and creative lives with dignity. Since its introduction to the world 20
years ago through publication of Human Development Reports, the human
development approach has generated a wide range of discussions among
development thinkers and practitioners, and gained enormous popularity
across the world, incorporated into various governments’ policy making and
research agendas. This presentation attempts to give an overview of the
concept – its background, fundamental concept, recent evolution in human
development thinking and measurement. Human development is an approach that
encompasses a wide spectrum of issues which cannot be covered in one short
lecture. This introductory presentation is intended as a food for thought
for further discussions, reading, thinking and research among participants.
