More info on Khmer Republic (1). Was Lon Nol intelligent leader? *Lon Nol on 9 October 1970 officially proclaimed the Khmer Republic. (2). Sirik Matak, the true power behind the March 1970 changed the government. Sirik Matak on paper remained second in command to Lon Nol. (3). In tam, by 1971 had amassed considerable political experience across the top echelon of government. In June 1972, however, In Tam made the mistake of running in presidential election against Lon Nol. When the latter claimed a 55 percent victory in count widely viewed as fraudulent (some estimate Lon Nol polled as low as 10 percent), the two became bitter rivals. (4).The influent and popular Khmer Krom leader Son Ngoc Thanh, who the marshal Lon Nol coaxed into the premier’s seat in March 1972. But after being targeted in bomb attack that August (probably planned by the uber-ambitious Lon Non). (5).Brigadier General Lon Non, commander of 3 Division. They had called him “Petit Marechal”. (6). The Khmer Rouge registered sharp growth in quality and quantity during the 1st year of the Lon Nol regime. (7). Back in October 1972, Kissinger and negotiator Le Duc Tho had been able to achieve a breakthrough in their peace negotiations. The resulting Peace Accord, was signed by Kissinger and Le Duc Tho on 27 January 1973.
