I used Jon's book for my first camera and am building a second now. A light leak around the film holder is not a problem at all! The spring that holds the ground glass frame on holds the film holder tight to the wood and you will have a frame around three sides of the film holder as well to prevent light leaks. On the top of the film holder is a notch that so you can align the holder in the frame correctly and this helps as well. If you follow Jon's instructions, or at least build a good flat surface for the film holder seat no light will leak! Dan Rhoades

This is perhaps a stupid question, but here goes anyway...
I'm contemplating a 5x7 homebuilt flatbed view camera. I've looked at everything I could find on the web (Jon Grepstad's pages and book are especially good) as well as looking at numerous pix of cameras. What puzzles me is how one guarantees a light-tight seal around the film holder. It appears to my naive eye that there could be sneak paths around the edges, mainly because I can't imagine one could achieve a tight enough fit to prevent them.
Am I missing something in the construction aspects? Or is this one of the functions of the dark cloth?
Thanks for the bandwidth and the info.
