You got my curiousity up....
I put both lenses into my optical design software. I created a 100mm f8 lens and
plotted spot size at different fields.
It should be understood that a singlet is not a great lens. There will be lots of
abberations and color, but if this is what you are after this will do it.
The winner is....The plano-convex lens with the curved side facing the subject.
Second is the Double convex, with on axis performance being about the same, and out in
the field being a bit less. Last is the plano-convex lens with the plano side facing
forward.
Just as an aside I mounted a lens like this for a well known photographer onto an
RB67. They wanted that dreamy, old time picture look.

Hi all, I am in the process of designing and building a box camera (my first homemade
camera). I was thinking about reusing an old lens, but have decided to buy the lens
new at Edmund Scientific. They sell two different kind of lenses, double-convex (DCX)
and plano-convex (PCX), and I am not sure which one would be best. They both seem to
be able to do the job. Most of my existing box cameras use the DCX kind, but I have
one that uses PCX. Can anyone please explain to me the differences, or point me in the
direction of some information (preferably free) to help me learn and decide.
