Talking of scrapped printers. Ten or so years ago I was trying to get an
old IBM Displaywriter system working. The printers from these systems
are very large and very heavy and have in their center a metal frame and
a large, fine pitched worm drive. A friend of mine used the mechanism
from a simular printer to make a plotter while we were at college, the
fine pitch of the worm screw would seem to be perfect as a precise
focusing track.
The Display Writer cost $1 10 years ago, I know of simular printers that
have been thrown away. 1980's vintage Daisywheel and Golfball printers
dont have the flexability to keep up with modern inkjets, these days
companies pay to throw them out.
