One source for thin black mat plastic is the cheap binders @99 cents at
office product stores. These are half-inch or 1 inch binders. The plastic
is relatively thin and is usually dimpled on one side and flat on the other
and comes in various colors including black. I have cut masks from this for
about the same reason as you state and they seemed to work OK. Initially I
tried cutting them with a paper cutter, but would not recommend it.
Repeatedly cutting with an Exacto knife did just fine. You can even cut a
pattern on the inner edge of the mask to make the neg look like it was taken
in one of those fancy Euro cameras. The plastic is almost thin enough to
use as a dark slide. They also have binders made from stiff card stock that
would work as well but would probably not be as durable.
