I believe the material that Alan was referring to is the thin FLOPPY (hence
the name) black plastic that is used to make the jacket for the 5.25" disk,
not the magnetic disk that it encloses. If you get real lucky you might
find a friend with some 8" floppy disks. Lots of material to spare and I'll
be kicking myself for some time to come having thrown out a few thousand
8-inchers when cleaning house at Radio Shack.
Moral of story: NEVER throw anything away, even if you need to buy another
house to store it all.
