Hi:     The point source idea has been around for many years and can be made
to work very well indeed. I first came across it in the early 1960s in a
flight simulator projection system. A zirconium arc lamp was the light
source and no lenses were needed to project the roughly 135 degree wide
circular image into a spherical overhead dome. Zirconium arc lamps are
still available but I've forgotten where.
