For those with the patience and skill, another excellent material is
Kydex. It a PVC/acrylic alloy that comes in sheets in a useful range of
colours (including a very nice black, thickness of up to about 1/4" I
think. (I use it in 1/8 and 1/16 thicknesses.) The surface is glossy on
one side, hair-cell textured on the other which is very handy. It can
easily be drape-thermoformed over a wooden mold with a kitchen oven for
first even heating and a hairdryer for assistance. It can also be vacuum
and pressure molded and machines easily with woodworking tools. Do a
Google search on the brand name "Kydex" and you will be rewarded with
literature and information. It's good stuff and I use a fair amount in
building instrument cases and panels for work as well as for bits and
pieces of large model airplanes. bye, sid.
