I've been brainstorming on what I can use as an alternative to a folded
bellows structure.

One idea I had was to use these little retractable keychains, or id card
holders. The little plastic ones that have a somewhat strong return.

I figured four of these mounted in a square to the front standard and the
back standard of the camera would extend and retract, and hold enough
tension to keep cloth wrapped around them from collapsing in or drooping
down.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried this.

The damned things are expensive for what you get. I can get some wholesale
for $3.75 in lots of 20, or about $6 a piece off the shelf. That seems sort
of ridiculous since metal retractable tape measures of a small size sell for
about $2. The just don't always retract reliably.

Any ideas on this, or anyone know of a cheaper source for these?

Dwight
